Ürgüp: The Authentic Cappadocian Town Where History Meets Modern Life
Ürgüp is Cappadocia's most characterful town — historic Greek mansions, local wine houses, boutique shopping, and a genuine local life that most tourists never discover.
Göreme may be the tourism capital of Cappadocia, but Ürgüp is its soul. Located just 20 kilometers east of Göreme, this town of approximately 17,000 inhabitants has managed something rare in heavily-touristed regions: it has retained a genuine, functioning local identity while simultaneously developing a sophisticated, high-quality tourism infrastructure. Walking through Ürgüp's old quarter is to move between layers of history — Ottoman stone houses, old Greek (Rum) mansions, Byzantine-era cave dwellings, and Seljuk caravanserais all share the same narrow stone streets.
**History of Ürgüp:**
Known to the ancients as Osiana and to the Byzantines as Hagios Prokopios, Ürgüp has been continuously inhabited for millennia. Until the 1923 population exchange between Greece and Turkey, it had a substantial Greek-speaking Christian community whose presence is still visible today in the grand stone mansions (many now converted to boutique hotels) and the remains of churches scattered throughout the old town. The exchange, which removed the Greek community to mainland Greece and settled Turkish Muslims from Greece in their place, left a cultural palimpsest that gives Ürgüp its unique and melancholy atmosphere.
**What to Do in Ürgüp:**
**Explore the Old Town on Foot:** The most rewarding way to experience Ürgüp is to abandon any plan and simply walk. The old town's stone lanes, carved cave homes, and sudden panoramic terraces reward exploration. Temenni Tepesi (Wishing Hill), above the town center, offers a panoramic view over the rooftops and the surrounding fairy chimney landscape, and is home to the Kılıçarslan Tomb — a Seljuk-era monument.
**Wine Tasting & Wineries:** Ürgüp is the wine capital of Cappadocia. The Turasan Winery, established in 1943 and still family-run, offers guided tours of its cellars and tastings of the full range of Cappadocian varietals — Emir whites, Öküzgözü reds, and premium blends. Several smaller independent wine bars in the town center are excellent for tasting local labels alongside regional mezes.
**Boutique Shopping:** Ürgüp's covered bazaar and surrounding streets offer some of the finest artisan shopping in Cappadocia — hand-woven kilims and carpets, silver jewelry, onyx stone carvings, local ceramics, and bottles of Cappadocian wine and honey to bring home.
**Dining:** Ziggy Cafe & Wine Bar is Ürgüp's most celebrated dining destination, combining excellent international cooking with an outstanding selection of local and international wines. For traditional Cappadocian cuisine, several family-run restaurants in the old town cook from recipes unchanged for generations.
**Day Trips from Ürgüp:** Mustafapaşa (the former Sinassos, a beautifully preserved Greek village), Ortahisar Castle, and the Damsa Reservoir are all within 15 minutes of Ürgüp and make excellent half-day excursions.
